Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium, which surrounds the abdomen
and the chest. It is caused by asbestos exposure, the fibrous material which is
used in the construction of thousands of products today.
There are four main types of mesothelioma: (F Pleural Mesothelioma) This
form is a small lump and cannot be felt with the hands. It usually starts as a
lump and then grows over time. The sufferer's body remains healthy, but the
lump is typically discovered on physical examination.
Men and women can both get this form of mesothelioma. Most people exposed
to asbestos get F pleural mesothelioma, while a minority of the cases of M
pleural mesothelioma involve exposure to the other three types. Most people who
get these types of mesothelioma can live completely normal lives with no
symptoms for many years.
People who are exposed to high levels of asbestos on a daily basis can
develop F pleural mesothelioma after a lifetime of regular exposure. This type
of mesothelioma is not as aggressive as some of the other forms of
mesothelioma.
(M pleural mesothelioma) This type of mesothelioma often affects younger
men and women, as this type of cancer is very rare in women.
While asbestos can cause lung cancer, it is much more common in its
association with lung cancer. Most people who suffer from mesothelioma will die
from lung cancer or other causes unrelated to mesothelioma. This is another
form of cancer that may spread to other organs in the body.
Patients with this form of mesothelioma need chemotherapy. This is
sometimes combined with other treatments including surgery to remove the
affected organs. This cancer is generally treated with chemotherapy to control
its symptoms.
Chemotherapy drugs work by killing off any new cell growth. Patients
suffering from mesothelioma and other forms of cancer will need this treatment
at least once, especially since this cancer has a poor prognosis.
Most mesothelioma patients can expect to reach the terminal stage of their
disease within 5 years. Many people who are diagnosed with this type of cancer
can expect to live for five years or less. Sometimes patients will live much
longer than this, but the majority of these patients will survive for at least
five years.
The cancer is highly treatable, and many patients with this type of cancer
will live longer than five years, even after reaching the aggressive cancer
stage. Cancer has no cure, but the prognosis for most people with cancer is
good. If the cancer is diagnosed and treated early, the patient should be able
to get well enough to be able to live an active life as long as the cancer is
treated.
The number of cases of mesothelioma diagnosed each year continues to
increase, and the chances of survival are excellent. Even after treatment, many
patients still survive this type of cancer.
If you are suffering from cancer and find yourself in this situation, don't
give up hope. With the support of your family and friends, you will be able to
continue with your life and to continue to fight for your life. You have
options.
